While cannabis has been used medicinally for thousands of years, the endocannabinoid system has only been discovered and studied during the 1980’s. The endocannabinoid system is a nerve signaling system throughout the human body that helps maintain physiological, emotional and cognitive stability and is made up of endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells and they regulate our sleep, mood, appetite, reproduction and pain response. With its complex actions in our immune system, nervous system, and virtually all of the body's organs, the endocannabinoids are literally a bridge between body and mind. A deficiency in this system may exist and be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms of an endocannabinoid deficiency might include a lowered pain threshold and improper regulation of digestion, mood, and sleep. Researchers are starting to look at certain diseases, such as IBS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and its connection to a possible endocannabinoid deficiency.
