Are you in the Red Zone of Stress? - #31
Emotional stress is a major contributing factor to the six leading causes of death in the United States: cancer, coronary heart disease, accidental injuries, respiratory disorders, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide.
The top five most stressful life events include:
Death of a loved one
Divorce
Moving
Major illness or injury
Job loss
Stress affects the way in which our genes are expressed through epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of what turns our genes on or off, like a light switch. When we are chronically stressed about a work deadline, a bad relationship, emotional eating, and so on, our genes will negatively change.
Stress causes you to gain weight, lose hair, feel anxious/depressed, lower your cognitive functioning, affect your sleep, change the way you breathe, lowers your motivation to take care of yourself and much more. Women who are on birth control or who are transitioning through menopause experience stress. Certain medications can induce stress. Going on a severe diet can induce stress.
Stress is the foundation of creating those stories in our head that hold us back.
My guest today is going to share with us what exactly is going on biochemically and emotionally when stress hits us and how to help ourselves improve our skillsets to handle stress differently.
